Pets eating processed pet foods acquire a food intolerance. There are differences in allergy and intolerances. Allergies are life threatening. Like someone allergic to peanuts. They can have an allergic reaction, the throat swell up and cut off their airway. Intolerances cause many other issues. Hives, rash, hot spots/skin conditions, bad breath, vomiting, diarrhea, GERD etc. Too many to mention them all here. If a dog is eating the same food, day in and day out, your dog is building an intolerance to that food. It is imperative to change foods every 3 months.

DIET-This is your most important step to make a change in. Pet Food companies process animals that come from all types of places. Animal shelters of pets that have been euthanized, road kill, animals that have been used for breeding or for human consumption and have stopped providing the necessary things that factories are taking from them. If a cow falls down and doesn't/can't get back up, they will beat the cow to death, put a chain around it and drag it out to the pile of dead animals and it will sit there until it rots. This is the process happening every single day and these dead animals are going into pet foods. Pet foods are really not pet foods. They are labeled under pet feed by the FDA. Pet feed has different guidelines. To read more on how pet food is made and what's in it...click here.
Kibble/dry foods are over processed and are saturated in old restaurant grease to make the kibble more palpable. The ingredients listed on the package is not completely accurate. Many ingredients will come from different processing plants. Ingredients added into foods may have come from China. Ingredients not listed on the package are because it may have occurred during the rendering process or other places. Read all about kibble, click here.
No matter whether you are feeding dry or wet, look into changing to a homemade diet. RAW being the number one best diet. Home Cooked is fine but it also must be balanced with added supplements. I recommend supplements for all diets no matter what you feed. Recommended supplements are even for healthy dogs.

If your dog has a medical condition, make sure the supplements are acceptable for your dog's diet. These supplements can be adjusted per each dog's condition and/or age.
A raw diet sounds gross and you hear so much about bacteria. The FDA is on a roll right now attacking raw foods. The FDA is against raw diets. They are apart of the pet food industry when it comes to dry or wet pet foods. Let me ask you this... Do you prepare steak, hamburger, chicken, pork etc in your kitchen for supper? Do you eat prime rib or rare steaks or hamburgers? If so, then you are just as much risk for bacterial contaminants as you are feeding raw. The safest thing to do is always clean up well with soap and water after you are finished. If you are concerned about your dog's paws or mouth, feel free to clean them off as well. Do what you need to do to keep it clean and what will make you feel more comfortable. There are different types of raw meats. Whole carcass, pieces of meat, and ground. Pick which one works best for you.
I am not a whole carcass kind of person. I think it takes a special person to feed a carcass. I prefer mostly ground with some pieces. Ground makes it easy to add your supplements in. To learn more about homemade diets (raw or cooked)....click here.

Dogs get leaky gut syndrome as well and can wreck havoc on their systems. To fix this problem, you MUST change the diet. When you makes changes to a better diet, you may see symptoms worsen with the food intolerances and such. This is the leaky gut issue. It will pass with time, I promise. There is much you can do to help keep these to a minimum. Coconut oil works well for any issues...internally and externally. The body is also detoxing. Getting rid of all of the built up of horrible processed foods out of the system. The body will go through changes that may make you want to revert back to the original plan that was semi working. You may even see mucus in the stool. DON'T GIVE UP! That's the worst thing you can do. Just don't give up. Fight through it and it will get much better in time. Once things start to calm down, you can begin slowly helping the body detox, you can add in supplements like burdock root, dandelion, and milk thistle. Give these for at least 3 months (5 days on/2 days off.) The best thing you can do for your dog is change to a raw diet.
Water-Water is just as important for your pets as it is for you. The best thing you can do is add a filter to your drinking water. Fluoride is a toxic disease causing additive and should be filtered from water. Chlorine is another. You can buy a really good filter for under $200. Even $100 if you're on a very tight budget. Provide water (and food) in stainless steel or high quality ceramic or glass bowls. Keep them clean, wash with soap and water daily and provide fresh filtered water. To find a good filter for your home...click here.
Medications-When your dog is sick, you take them into the vet. The vet writes a script and sends you home. Depending on the illness, medications should be used only when absolutely necessary and sometimes shouldn't be used at all depending on the illness. There are many other options to use that do not include medications. Always check out the insert for warnings and contraindications. NSAIDS and steroids are highly dangerous and should be used with extreme caution and given only if absolutely necessary. Do not under any circumstances use flea and tick medications..including topicals. For safe alternatives...click here.
Heartworm preventatives are not preventatives. According to where you live, you can give Heartgard every 45 days although I wouldn't use those chemicals. I myself live in the heart of mosquito country and it stays hot here about 9 months out of the year. And I do not give heartworm preventatives that contain chemicals. I give once a week the Heartworm nosode. I do have my dogs tested every 6 months to make sure they are HW negative.

Vaccines-Vaccines cause cancer, disease and joint issues. They contain mercury, aluminum and other chemicals. This includes human and animal vaccines. All puppies need their booster shots, but once they have had them, it is best to not give vaccines unless needed. Titers are good to do in place of a vaccine so you can check the immunity of each disease. There are titers for different vaccines given. (Distemper, parvo etc) You can titer for rabies but by law, you must get a rabies vaccine every 3 years. Some cities make their own laws and have it at one year although this isn't common. Do not take your vets word on this. Find out on your own. Vets love selling vaccines. It's how they make money. If your dog is around parvo or places that have been exposed to parvo, then you dog may need a parvo shot. TITER to find out the immunity first which can be done cheaply through vacci-check or better yet, have your vet draw blood and send to Kansas State University for a more thorough test for about $28 to check several at once.
Make sure your vet does not give one vaccine that is the combo. Each should be given in single doses and at least 2 weeks apart. I myself would wait a month. For rabies, ask for the thimerosol free vaccine. It should only be given every 3 years. If you have a vet that wants to argue with you or boss you around, find a new vet. They are a dime a dozen. It is your money and your dog, YOU make the decisions. Do not be bullied by vets. Vets love to argue over diet and vaccines. They did not go to school on nutrition. They have only learned how to sell pet foods for profit. Read more on titers..here.

Immune Systems- Immune systems are weakened when you use medications, vaccines, poor diet, unfiltered water and environmental conditions. It is important to know when to use added supplements to rebuild the system if these conditions occur. A strong immune system will ward off fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and most of all, diseases. It is vital that you keep your dog's immune system strong by doing all the things mentioned here.
Supplements- Supplements are important in a dog's diet. You may THINK feeding a raw diet is good enough and nothing more is needed. You would be wrong. There is a lot of controversy over this. I think even us as humans need supplements even if we are eating the best diets. The environment takes away a lot from our bodies as does the food we eat. You can eat an organic and perfect diet and you may still need some nutrients. A lot of our foods even though organic, may have grown in soil that has been depleted of nutrients. Our country has over farmed our soils and used so many pesticides, that these issues may have ran over into organic areas. And unless you eat/feed the PERFECT (what is perfect?) diet, you and your dog will need supplements. These are important so don't ignore this.

As Dr Dobias puts it-"It is no longer a question if a diet without supplements is complete. The question is what is missing. No matter what diet you feed, it is likely to be depleted of some nutrients because of worldwide mineral and nutrient soil depletion. Dr Dobias"
And Dr Karen Becker says- "The best of diets – even a raw, species-specific diet – can come from soils that are depleted or from lower quality food sources. Sometimes the food simply loses many of its nutrients through processing and storage.
And most commercially available pet foods, even if they’re “fortified” to meet AAFCO standards, contain synthetic, lab-concocted vitamins and minerals which don’t provide optimum nutrition."

Disease-Poor diet, vaccines, medications, unfiltered water and the air we breathe and the ground we walk on..is covered with pesticides and chemicals that are deadly to us and our pets. We have higher cancer rates in the USA than we did 20 years ago. More preservatives and additives have been added to our foods and waters. More on our fertilizers and medications. We must avoid all of these as much as possible. It is crucial. Use organic/all natural fertilizers on your yard and pesticides that are not harmful to children or pets. Cancer, heart conditions, diabetes, cushing's, autoimmune disease, arthritis/lameness, seizures/epilepsy are to name a few of what these toxins do.
Vet Visits-Vet visits should consist of wellness visits. Every 6 months for a senior or ill dog and once a year for healthy dogs for a wellness check. Bloodwork, heartworm test, thyroid test, x-rays if needed and in an aging dog or a dog prone to hip dysplasia. Run a ProBNP test to check for early heart disease. If your dog shows early signs, get them on Hawthorn and COQ10 to name a few. Vet visits should not be determined by what your vet says is a must. If your vet tries to put your dog on a RX pet food diet, refuse. You have other options. That is bad food and actually makes things worse. Chicken and rice (and scrambled eggs) diet is always acceptable on a short term. Refuse vaccines and receive only if needed on your terms. Do your research.

Products in-home-Things in and around your home is crucial as well. What laundry detergents and fabric softeners do you use? Try dryer balls! What fertilizers? What pesticides? Use all natural chemical free products. Including things you may spray in your home..like air fresheners (throw away and make your own) or also the use of carpet cleaning chemicals. Use vinegar and water for carpet cleaning and baking soda when you vacuum. Don't use air fresheners. Use a diffuser using essential oils instead. Instead of using Windex for cleaning your windows, use rubbing alcohol, vinegar and water. Be cautious about EVERYTHING around you. Be aware of all things at all times. Eventually this will all come natural for you and become instinct to provide the safest place for you and your family. You would also be doing this for your children.

All of this may seem like a lot..but in time..it wont be. Start at the top and work your way down as you are ready. Buy organic any chance you can. Some organic things are extremely expensive. Buy what you can and try to work those items into your budget the best you can. The little things you do, can mean a lot for you and your pet's future health. If you do all of these things, your Dr and vet visits will reduce yearly and you will save money on illnesses and disease and use the money on wellness checks instead. Stay ahead of the game. Don't be reactive, be proactive. In other words, don't wait for the disease to come to you. Test early for disease and tackle them head on by having a strong immune system and adding the correct supplements. Like for example..doing the ProBNP test and finding your dog is in early stage of heart disease. Use herbs and supplements to help fight this disease and your dog may never have heart disease in its life. All dogs/people should be on a joint supplement as well. Preservative FREE of course. This will help to avoid joint issues down the road. Also if your dog has been diagnosed with chronic joint disease, Adequan is a wonderful and safe RX. Injections can be given at home to save money. Have your vet show you how to give them.
I hope this has helped to guide you in the right direction.

I have found no matter what people read, they are still in denial and won't take these steps. I find that extremely sad for them as well as their pets. Please don't be one of these people. Make a change and I promise, it will be the best thing you can do for yourself and your pets. If you have read this entire article, then I feel you are one of these people eager to make a change. Many people are getting on board with safer foods and alternatives and finding out, healthcare professionals do not always have our best interest at heart. They were not taught too but some can choose to learn. If WE change, they have to make changes too and learn a better way of healthcare. Thank you for being apart of this change. Your body and your pets will reward you for it.
