From Larry Smith, the President of Earthworks, who wanted to clear up the misconception about any dangers of inhaling food grade diatomaceous earth – here is what he wrote: "This is a misunderstanding about food grade DE. There are two kinds of DE—food grade and filter grade (used in swimming pool and other filters) Only the filter grade is dangerous to breathe. The “dangerous” part of DE is the amount of crystalline silica that is in it. Filter grade is 65% crystalline silica while food grade is less than 1/10 of 1%! The world health org. has said that diatomaceous earth is safe to breathe as long as the crystalline content is under 2%. Food grade is 20X lower than even that level!!"
So, no need to be concerned about any danger associated with using DE for pets, bedding, consumption or anything else – as long as it’s FOOD GRADE!
Diatomaceous Earth is extremely safe for pets (dogs, cats, horses, goats, pigs etc) and can be used externally or internally. There are reports of humans sleeping better and feeling better overall. Some of the things that have been reported to help:

What Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth Does In Your Body
By VetMedicine
This page explains the mechanisms of Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth within the human body to achieve the many health benefits that consumers have experienced.
Diatomaceous Earth Health Benefits: Why and How
1) Diatomaceous Earth - (magnified 7000 times) - it looks like a cylinder full of holes - kind of like Rice Chex Cereal. This cylinder has a very strong negative charge. As these millions of cylinders move through the stomach and digestive tract, they attract and absorb fungi, protozoa, viruses, endotoxins, pesticides, and drug residues, E.coli, and heavy metals. These are trapped inside the cylinder and passed out of the body. In addition, any larger parasites that happen to be in the stomach or digestive tract are "cut up" and killed by the sharp edges of the Diatomaceous Earth. All of these activities result in a much healthier body with less sickness. We often hear the phrase "I just feel better" with our Diatomaceous Earth users. This better feeling comes from all the "junk" being removed from the body and by giving the immune system the "jump start" it needs.

2) Diatomaceous Earth is quite hard. On the hardness scale where diamonds are a 9, Diatomaceous Earth is a 7. This is very important because as those millions of tiny hard and sharp Diatomaceous Earth cylinders pass through the small and large intestines, they "scrub" the walls. After only a few months of taking Diatomaceous Earth, the intestine wall is no longer coated with mucus and molds but CLEAN!!

The advantages of this are several:
1. Regular bowel movements (This is the #1 comment everyone makes about D.E..)
2. Healthier colon. This is especially important as we get older. A clean healthy colon keeps away polyps, cancers, and ulcers. Today, many are spending thousands of dollars to get colonics to do the same thing as Diatomaceous Earth does.

3. Many users report increased energy and needing less sleep. This is a result of all the food and nutrients that are taken in being better absorbed into the bloodstream. With a coated colon--many nutrients never get absorbed.
3) A small amount of Diatomaceous Earth gets absorbed into the blood stream as silica. One of the benefits of Silica is that it helps to destroy bad fats. Everyone we know who takes Diatomaceous Earth has lowered their cholesterol by 40-50 points, and they are amazed at how their high blood pressure goes down. Go to the page on "Human Use" and review all of the benefits of silica to the body.
1. Sore joints and ligaments feel better
2. Skin clears up (acne-age spots-psoriasis)
3. Hair and nails are stronger and grow faster
4. Stronger teeth and gums
5. Healthier respiratory tract--less coughing
6. Menopause has less symptoms
7. Healthier urinary tract
The benefits of silica are many. In today's grains, there is actually a shortage of silica.

Years ago, the silica found in our foodstuffs was adequate, but with today's hybrids and depleted soils, only about 1/3 of the silica needed is supplied in our food. Diatomaceous Earth is a simple and inexpensive way to get the silica your body needs.
Any food grade diatomaceous earth uses other than those approved by the EPA, FDA, or USDA are strictly reports of what hundreds of users as well as we ourselves have done with diatomaceous earth.

Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.)-It bears stating that you must feed a food grade D.E. to your dog; pool grade D.E. is dangerous for your dog. D.E. can reduce the number of worms in your dog although it may not be too effective for tapeworm. For external parasite control, simply rub the powder at full strength into the coat for fleas and sprinkle on bedding.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) for Flea Control
How DE works to controls fleas in the house and yard
By Janet Tobiassen Crosby, DVM
What is Diatomaceous Earth?
Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.) is a fine flour-like powder, the microscopic remains of fossilized diatoms, a type of algae. Diatoms are found in freshwater and saltwater. Capable of photosynthesis, they are an important food source for many organisms in these water ecosystems.
Diatom cell walls are made of silica, a component of glass. D.E. has been used for years as an insecticide to control mites, fleas and other insects; find out how it works here.
How Diatomaceous Earth Works to Kill Fleas and Other Insects
Fleas and other insects with an exoskeleton (hard shell) are susceptible to the glass-sharp edges of the microscopic diatoms. The silica shards cut through the waxy exoskeleton surface, effectively drying out the flea, resulting in death to these types of insects and their larvae.

Diatomaceous Earth Pros and Cons
Pros:
The good news is that Diatomaceous Earth is non-toxic to humans and animals; it is even used in some foods food (food-grade quality, not the D.E. used for pool filtration systems) and some health supplements. D.E. is also used for a variety of beauty and health care products.
Daily vacuuming is an important component of household flea control. Diatomaceous Earth can be used safely on many surfaces and floor coverings, vacuuming up the D.E. after allowed to sit for at least a few hours or overnight. A few days, if doable.
Diatomaceous Earth is safe to use on pet bedding, in addition to weekly washing of pet bedding in warm water.
Diatomaceous Earth is safe to use around the yard, but large amounts may be necessary to have a positive effect on flea control. Regular mowing and trimming of vegetation also helps. For serious flea infestations of yard and garden, a consultation with a pest exterminator is in order.
Diatomaceous Earth is not toxic, does not have any residual problems, and because it is a mechanical killer versus a chemical killer, resistance to D.E. is not a problem.

Cons:
Diatomaceous Earth is a very fine, silky powder; similar to flour or talc. Food grade DE is ok to ingest, so it is not toxic to pets or people.
Diatomaceous Earth that is used for pool filtration systems is very finely ground and is dangerous to breathe in. It is not recommended for flea and insect control.
Diatomaceous Earth must be dry to work. Wetting it down or trying to mix it with water to spray it and not breathe in dusk negates the useful action of D.E. Always wear a mask when applying DE.
Related to this, Diatomaceous Earth is less effective in humid environments.
Some advocate using Diatomaceous Earth directly on pets. Caution is advised if you elect to use it on your pet. Use food grade DE only. DE is very drying - it may dry out your pet's skin. Protect your pets eyes, nose, mouth when applying. Shampoo your pet within 12 hours, a conditioner is recommended.

A few tips that may be helpful when using Diatomaceous Earth Powder:
Remember to keep the D.E. powder dry when storing or using it for pest control. Wet or damp D.E. is not as effective in eliminating pests. For household use on plants and pets, an empty spice jar with holes in the top is great for sprinkling D.E. powder! A ‘powder-puff’ or small duster can also be helpful in applying D.E. powder to your pets and their surroundings. For potted plants, D.E. is an excellent soil additive. It will retain moisture and nutrients in the soil and promote better drainage. To reduce flies around horses, pigs, chickens, etc., mix D.E. powder into animal feed! The D.E. retains pest-control properties even ‘post-digestion.’ As flies lay their eggs in manure and the eggs develop into maggots, the D.E. in the waste will kill the maggots.
