I will update as new or better products are found.

Lamb and rice diets may contribute to Taurine deficiency, either due to the effect of rice or a lower availability of Taurine in lamb.

If your pet is suffering from a heart condition, you may want to try these vitamins and herbs. It has been documented that these have shown an improvement in heart conditions, and even eliminating medications or stopping them altogether.

**Please seek the advice of a holistic vet before starting any change in diet and/or adding supplements.

In today's world, commercial pet foods have created many diseases including heart disease. It is one of the top causes of heart conditions just below Cancer and organ failure stemming from the toxic ingredients of garbage thrown into pet foods. If your dog is ill or has a heart condition, change the diet immediately.

I had a dog suffering from a heart murmur and with several of these supplements, I was able to stop all coughing and stopped all medications. Give it a few weeks to see if coughing subsides.

Picture
In severe cases, you may not be able to get your dog off medications but you may have a chance of reducing them and reducing the symptoms by adding these supplements.

These are best when split into 2 doses per day.

The links provided below are brands that do not or have a minute amount of preservatives. If you do use capsules, open them and sprinkle them on food and mix it in. I mix my liquids and powders in with the wet foods. Cottage cheese, plain kefir, plain yogurt are also things you can add them in. Feed as a treat!

There is such a test called the NTproBNP or proBNP test that checks your dog for heart disease. If you are unsure or suspect your dog may have heart problems, this test can be done through your vet with a simple blood test.

For Dogs Suspected of Heart Disease (Murmur or At-risk Breed)
NTproBNP <900 pmol/L NTproBNP concentration is not compatible with increased stretch and stress on the myocardium. Clinically significant heart disease is unlikely at this time.

For Doberman pinschers with NTproBNP  ≥735 pmol/L, Patient is at increased risk of occult dilated cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography and Holter monitoring or electrocardiogram (ECG) are recommended at this time.

NTproBNP 900–1,800 pmol/L
There is increased stretch and stress on the myocardium at this time. However, results in this range do not allow reliable differentiation between clinical signs due to heart failure versus those from other causes. Additional diagnostics are recommended.

For dogs <20 kg with mitral valve disease (MVD) and NTproBNP >1,500 pmol/L, Patient is at increased risk of heart failure in the coming 12 months. Thoracic radiographs and vertebral heart score (VHS), at a minimum, are required.

For dogs with NTproBNP results 900 pmol/L or higher, additional diagnostics to assess cardiac health include thoracic radiographs, electrocardiogram(EKG) and an echocardiogram. Echocardiography (ECG) generally provides the most accurate information regarding cardiac structure and function.

NTproBNP >1,800 pmol/L
There is evidence of increased stretch and stress on the myocardium. The likelihood that clinical signs (i.e., respiratory and/or exercise intolerance) are due to heart failure is high. Additional diagnostics are recommended to diagnose and assess severity of the disease.

Probiotics and Digestive enzymes are VERY important. The goal here is to make the immune system strong and rebuild/repair muscles, liver etc. If you have a healthy gut, you will have a healthier body. Diet plays an extremely important roll. A homemade diet (raw preferably) is your best diet. Canned being next although I don't recommended because you have no control over the actual ingredients. Make sure it is low/no in sodium. Do not feed dry dog food.

Do not feed anything with salt in it (goat and rabbit proteins great for heart).

Provide fresh filtered water at all times.

If your dog is on medications, add milk thistle to the diet to help filter the liver. Use for 30 days with at least one day off a week.

Some of the supplements below can be pretty costly but they are very important.
So try to work them into your budget.
When first starting out with these supplements, start with a lower dosage and over a week or two, raise it to full strength. Don't try to add ALL of these at one time. Start half one week and the other half over a few weeks. If you have loose stools or any other rare side effects, either reduce amounts till things level off or stop that particular supplement causing the issues. You can search around other sites for the same brand to possibly find better prices.

Several people have emailed me on dosing to some of these. All herbs, chart at bottom. If you are not sure what an herb is, it's usually a plant or plant based. The other things like D-Ribose, L-Arginine, L-Glutamine etc...follow instructions on pet products. On human supplements, base dosage off of a 150 lb human.

Powders:
toy-small dogs: 1/8 - 1/4 tsp; (250mg)
med dogs: 1/2 - 3/4 tsp; (500mg)
large dogs: 1 tsp - 1  1/2 tsp. (750mg)

Start with lower dose the first 5-7 days and watch for poop changes or any reactions otherwise.

I prefer human supplements a lot of the time as I am beginning to not trust many pet products. With human supplements, you must be able to read ingredients so you can keep your dog safe.

Digestive Enzymes (Sold on Amazon only)

Strengthen your dog's digestive tract, while reducing gas, bloating and indigestion.

This combination is great for building the immune system as well as reducing any chronic or acute digestive issues.
Remember, a weak immune system can cause inflammation in the body in which also creates inflamed joints and arthritis conditions.

Dosage:
small dogs: 1/2 capsule
Med dogs: 1/2 - 1 capsule
Large/Giant dogs: 1 - 2 capsules

Open capsule and mix into wet foods

You may give this amount for 4 weeks at least then cut back once your dog becomes more stable.

These contain a small amount of vitamin A, B, and C along with some pre and pro-biotics.

*You can add an extra probiotic along with this supplement.

Yes these are human supplements but these are safe.

D-Ribose

Picture
D-Ribose (Drs Best) - 500mg-1000mg a day depending on size of dog.

Powder - approximately:
1/4 tsp small dogs
1/2 tsp med dogs
3/4-1 tsp large dogs

Supports healthy energy levels in heart and muscle tissue*
Maintains normal heart function*
Decreases free radical formation during exercise*

Ribose is an essential pentose (5-carbon) sugar utilized by the body to synthesize DNA, RNA and produce energy. Ribose is a fundamental building block of adenosine triphosphate (ATP - the substance in which the body stores intracellular energy), the preferential source of energy for skeletal muscle and heart tissue. Studies have shown that ribose supplementation can enhance cardiac energy levels and support cardiovascular metabolism.* Further studies suggest that ribose plays a role in supporting energy recovery after exercise.* Exercise increases free radical production in muscle tissue. Ribose may strengthen and support the body's crucial antioxidant defenses.*

Research suggests that optimal heart function requires a consistent supply of essential cofactor nutrients including CoQ10/Ubiquinol, D-Ribose, L-carnitine and Magnesium.

*Can cause some side effects including diarrhea, stomach discomfort, nausea, and low blood sugar.  Stop taking ribose at least 2 weeks before surgery.

Read more here about D-Ribose and how it works for heart failure.

Young at Heart for Dog Heart Disease

Picture
Effective support for your dogs heart
This gentle, natural supplement supports:
Healthy and normal heart function
Heart muscle & heart rhythm
Healthy blood pressure
Good circulation
This is a mix of ingredients. You may read the ingredients in FILE below to see what each do. The reviews here are good. I am not sure if I would select ONLY this product alone but, it certainly can cut down on purchasing a large amount of supplements. This product could be expensive for larger dogs as you use 1 drop per lb.

Nattokinase

Picture

Nattokinase has been shown to mimic and enhance the activity of plasmin, an enzyme that supports healthy blood clotting.

Nattokinase supports healthy blood pressure.

Small dogs: 1/4-1/2 capsule daily
Med dogs: 1/2-1 capsule daily
Large dogs: 1 capsule daily

These are approximate doses. Check with your holistic vet to see if they know about Nattokinase, or read below.

Pycnogenol or Pine Bark Extract

Picture
In animal studies, Pycnogenol has been shown to protect from cardiotoxicity caused by anti-tumor drugs. Because of it’s strong antioxidant properties, Pycnogenol has been proposed as a measure to prevent heart disease. Animal studies show that this extract can slow or reverse atherosclerosis. Pycnogenol has been shown to reduce capillary permeability, increase capillary resistance, and strengthen capillary walls. This extract has also been proven to reduce blood-platelet aggregation, creating better circulation and reducing plaque formation.

Dosage:  1-2 mg per lb of body weight.

Astaxanthin

Picture
Astaxanthin is known as the “king of the carotenoid family.” It’s a naturally occurring, non-toxic source of vitamin A that is hundreds of times more potent than vitamin E, ten times more potent than beta-carotene, and about five times more potent than lutein as a functional antioxidant.

Astaxanthin fights oxidative stress and free radical damage. It has very strong free radical scavenging abilities and helps protect cells, organs and tissues from oxidative damage.

Astaxanthin provides antioxidants to parts of the body that don’t normally receive a lot of antioxidant benefit. It can cross the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retina barrier. This means it can help reduce the potential for diseases of the central nervous system, the spinal cord, and the eye. Astaxanthin also supports immune function thanks to its high levels of beta-carotene.

Studies also show astaxanthin supports joint and muscle recovery after exercise, and cardiovascular health in dogs and cats.

Most other brands contain carrageenan, soy, safflower oil, sunflower oil or other forms of junk ingredients.

Here is another one for smaller dogs, click here. (poke hole in softgel and squeeze into foods)

1 - 2 mg daily per 20 lbs of body weight

Resveratrol

Picture
Cardiovascular health is another area that can be addressed by resveratrol. Its potent antioxidant properties have been shown to decrease low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol oxidation and platelet aggregation according to a study by Das M et all at the Cardiovascular Research Center at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Maintaining LDL levels with resveratrol can greatly promote cardiovascular health in canines. Reducing platelet aggregation is another potential benefit of resveratrol, the reduction of which can greatly reduce the risks of blood clots in dogs.

**You have to be careful with using human supplements in this supplement so stay with this brand. Most contain grape skins which grapes are deadly to dogs. So this one is made specifically for dogs and is safe. This is NOT cheap but worth it!

L-Carnitine

Picture
L-Carnitine – Avoid D-carnitine supplements. They interfere with the natural form of L-carnitine and may produce unwanted side effects. The amino acid l-carnitine can help with fat metabolism and thereby be beneficial for liver disease, and l-arginine may be helpful in reducing ammonia that can accumulate with liver disease.

Dosage:
Small dogs: 250mg
Medium dogs: 500mg

Heart Conditions

Angina -- Some good evidence shows that carnitine can be used along with conventional treatment for stable angina. Several clinical trials show that L-carnitine and propionyl-L-carnitine can help reduce symptoms of angina and improve the ability of people with angina to exercise without chest pain. Do not self-treat chest pain with carnitine, however. See your health care provider for diagnosis and conventional treatment, and take carnitine only under your health care provider's supervision.

Heart attack -- A few studies have found that carnitine may help when used with conventional medicines after a heart attack, but not all studies agree. Some small studies suggest that people who take L-carnitine supplements soon after a heart attack may be less likely to have another heart attack, die of heart disease, have chest pain and abnormal heart rhythms, or develop heart failure. However, other studies have shown no benefit. Treatment with oral carnitine may also improve muscle weakness. Carnitine should be used along with conventional medication under your health care provider supervision.

Heart failure -- A few small studies have suggested that carnitine (usually propionyl-L-carnitine) can help reduce symptoms of heart failure and improve exercise capacity in people with heart failure. However, more and larger studies are needed to know for sure.

Dr Becker: The food sources richest in L-carnitine are red meat, followed by chicken, pork, poultry, fish and dairy products. Plant foods — vegetables, fruits and grains — contain insignificant amounts.

Magnesium

Picture
Magnesium (needed): Dogs need to have Magnesium in their diet. Even with the best diet, your dog will probably be deficient. And if your dog is prone to ACL injuries, this is a requirement in the diet as well. Without the right level of magnesium, unabsorbed calcium can build up in your dog’s body causing Arthritis.

<--- Click image to go this product. The ingredients are great for the heart: Magnesium Glycinate, Magnesium Taurate, Di- Magnesium Malate, Magnesium Orotate

Magnesium Citrate (for oxalate stones, can have laxative effect)
Magnesium Taurate (for low stomach acid, calming, heart, can make blood sugar fluctuate, no laxative effect)
Magnesium Glycinate (no laxative effect, high absorption, for muscle pain, calming). Powder form here.
Magnesium Malate (for achy joints and/or muscles, fatigue, heart, can cause stomach upset, no laxative effect)
Magnesium Orotate (for heart failure, high absorbing magnesium)
Magnesium L-Threonate (for brain, absorbs well, calming, laxative effect)
Magnesium Chloride (for cellular detoxification and tissue purification, sluggish metabolism )
Magnesium Lactate (for moderate absorption, avoid with kidney issues restoring red blood cell levels of magnesium )
Magnesium Carbonate (for indigestion and acid reflux, can have laxative effect)

**Magnesium Stearate, Magnesium Gluconate, Magnesium Glutamate, Magnesium Aspartate, Magnesium sulfate (also called Epsom salts), and Magnesium Oxide should be avoided.

Approximate Dosage:

Small dogs: 10mg - 20mg
Medium dogs: 20mg - 50mg
Large dogs: 50mg - 100mg
Giant dogs: 100mg - 150mg

Or when using powder 1/4 teaspoon up to 1/2 teaspoon depending on size of dog.

You may also purchase the capsules and open them and sprinkle into foods. Then you have a measured dose that way. Adjust dosage accordingly to dogs weight per mg.

Magnesium as seen above can have a laxative effect. Start in small doses and work up to recommended dose or consult with your holistic vet.

Manganese
Manganese can be found here as well. If your dog doesn't take caps, open capsule and add into foods. Not needed if you are giving the Humic/Fulvic acid and greens powder and feeding a RAW diet.

Keep doses small.

Approximate daily dose (can do every other day):
1 mg: small dog
2-3 mg: medium dog
4-5mg: large dog

Astragalus

Picture
Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceous) One of my favorite herbs.
Immunostimulant, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, hypothyroid (mildly depresses thyroid function), hypotensive, digestive tonic. Works on immune systems, lungs, liver, heart, kidneys, thyroid, and digestive tract.

Astragalus is used for strengthening the body against viral infections of the respiratory and heart. Astragalus can be used for early treatment of a variety of respiratory infections, including kennel cough (Bordetella bronchiseptica). Astragalus helps to raise white blood cell counts and also boosts the body's immune system. Astragalus may be useful for helping the body protect itself and speed recovery from the damages of long-term steroid medications. Astragalus is also useful in early stages of kidney infection and/or renal failure. Astragalus is non-toxic in any dosages. Buy organic.

Selenium

Picture
 Selenium (Methylselenocysteine or Se-Methylselenocysteine)
In humans, it has been observed that using Selenium as a daily supplement for four years led to a big reduction in cancer deaths and reduction in the incidence of prostate, lung, colorectal and some types of skin cancer. The symptoms of Selenium deficiency include hypothyroidism, a weakened immune system, and heart disease. Selenium works well with vitamin E. You can find Selenium in sardines and beef.

Safe Dosage (once every 1-3 days):
Small dogs: 5mcg -10mcg
Medium dogs: 10mcg -20mcg
Large dogs: 20mcg -30mcg
Giant Dogs: 30mcg -50mcg

Doses may go higher than these but this is a safe amount.

For comparison-Humans: 100mcg. Selenium also binds to mercury metal fillings in teeth and crosses the blood brain barrier. Selenium attaches to heavy metals and settles into the brain. You may want to do an activated charcoal detox before using Selenium. Do NOT go over the recommended dosage unless under supervision of a vet.

L-Arginine

Picture
L-Arginine - 500-1000 mg. (Can help with the liver also as older dogs usually have liver spikes in numbers. The amino acid l-carnitine can help with fat metabolism and thereby be beneficial for liver disease, and l-arginine may be helpful in reducing ammonia that can accumulate with liver disease.

Higher amounts or in some rare cases can cause diarrhea.

L-Arginine is another amino acid that may provide beneficial effects for dogs with CHF (congestive heart failure) by improving endothelial function and cardiac output, and may result in improved exercise tolerance and decreased dyspnea (shortness of breath). Arginine has the ability to produce significant vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels). A 1991 report in the Lancet demonstrated that arginine improved coronary microcirculation. Do not use with myocardial infarction.

Organic Raw Camu Camu Powder (All Natural Vitamin C)

Picture
Camu camu is a low-growing shrub found throughout the river corridors of the Amazon rainforest of Peru and Brazil.

Camu camu is most famous for its mega-C content, containing 30 to 60 times more vitamin C than an orange. In addition it contains beta-carotene, potassium and many amino acids. This organic camu camu powder is low temperature processed and has a sweet and sour flavor.

**You CAN use ester C (magnesium ascorbate or calcium ascorbate) but it is a synthetic vitamin C so I will always recommend natural first.

Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin important for proper cell functioning and fat metabolism. Vitamin E is also an antioxidant. Vitamin E sources include meat such as liver & leafy green vegetables. Vitamin E deficiencies can cause eye, heart, liver, muscle, nerve and reproductive disorders. Vitamin E deficiency can also impact your dog’s bowels causing damage, hemorrhaging and destruction. Too high does of vitamin E can interfere with your dog’s ability to absorb vitamin A and vitamin K. Significantly, the inability to absorb vitamin K can lead to blood clotting problems.

Organic Hawthorn (also called Mayblossom)

Picture
click image to go to Amazon
Hawthorn- Hawthorn helps prevent and treat congestive heart failure in senior dogs (and people), and tones the hearts of younger dogs who have survived heartworm disease. Older dogs, especially those with cardiac or renal problems, can benefit from Hawthorn. Unlike most medications, tonic herbs do not suppress or replace natural functions in the body. Instead, they naturally help improve the body as a whole. Most tonic herbs do their work by providing special nutrients, enzymes that the body needs to bring overstressed organs and systems into functioning more appropriately. Hawthorn works over a period of time with daily use and improves the heart. Hawthorn helps support the heart in ways that no food or drug can. It helps to increase circulation and the transport of nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. Hawthorn has the ability to strengthen a weak or erratic heartbeat – such as that of elderly or energetically challenged dogs and this herb is very, very safe. In the hundreds of animal studies that have been conducted with this herb in the last 100 years, Hawthorn has shown extremely low toxicity in every animal tested.

Hawthorn is useful in the daily care of any older dog, but especially those who suffer from chronic heart problems and that have a weakened heart to be able to help it to pump blood. Hawthorn is also useful in cases of renal failure, especially in early stages.

Taurine (helps heart muscle contract)  (Included in the Magnesium Taurate)

Picture
Best brand
Picture
Picture
smaller dogs
Picture
powder form
Taurine-500 mg per day. L-Carnitine and Taurine achieve their best effects when a constant amount is maintained in the blood.

This brand appears to be sourced and made in USA.
Taurine is an amino acid that is good for the heart. Taurine deficiency may be linked to feeding certain lamb and rice diets, very low-protein diets, high-fiber diets, or vegetarian diets. Studies suggest that taurine supplementation may be helpful for dogs with heart failure even when no deficiency exists. Certain breeds of dogs have been found to develop dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) that is linked to taurine deficiency. Affected breeds include the American Cocker Spaniel, Portuguese Water Dog, Newfoundland and Golden Retriever. Other breeds that may be affected include the Scottish Terrier, Border Collie, Doberman Pinscher, and potentially other large and giant breeds as well. It is less likely that DCM in the Doberman Pinscher and Boxer is related to taurine deficiency, though supplementation will not hurt.

Give as much as 250 mg to a small dog,
500 mg to a medium dog and
750 mg to a large dog, twice a day.

Taurine is best given on an empty stomach. Note that taurine is abundant in raw meat, particularly heart, but much is lost when the meat is cooked. You may want to add some meat and canned fish with bones (low sodium sardines, jack mackerel, pink salmon) to the diet if your dog suffers from heart disease. Cooking reduces taurine, so feed raw or cook lightly. Canned fish is high in sodium, so rinse before feeding or look for low sodium fish. Vitamin B6 is needed for the conversion of taurine, so adding a B-complex vitamin supplement (better than supplementing B6 alone) is also a good idea.

Lamb and rice diets may contribute to taurine deficiency, either due to the effect of rice or a lower availability of taurine in lamb.

Grass fed Heart

Picture
Hearts contain a high amount of Taurine and is a natural source. This is your best option and also more expensive as you are getting a quality product. Love their products. This product is for humans so 1/2-2 caps daily should do the trick depending on size of your dog.

Turmeric

Picture
Early studies suggested that turmeric may help prevent atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque that can block arteries and lead to heart attack or stroke. In animal studies, an extract of turmeric lowered cholesterol levels and kept LDL "bad" cholesterol from building up in blood vessels. Because it stops platelets from clumping together, turmeric may also prevent blood clots from building up along the walls of arteries. But a double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that taking curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, at a dose of up to 4 g per day did not improve cholesterol levels.

Boswellia has also been shown in preliminary research to be effective at reducing swelling around brain tumors. A study performed in 2004 shows that Boswellia is an herb that lives up to its reputation. Twenty-four dogs with chronic joint pain were administered a dose of Boswellia once a week for 6 weeks. After just a couple weeks, 71% of the dogs showed improvement. The research showed that improvement was gradual but Boswellia did seem to help reduce local pain and stiff gaits. Boswellia is one herb that seems to work well.

Vitamin K

Picture
I see many pet products offering K1 which is used for accidental rat poisoning ingesting. Why they are not offering K2 is beyond me. There is a link to an article for dogs and cats below. Not all Vit K supplements are created equal. Before searching different brands, make sure you know how to read ingredients.

Use caution with this vitamin as it is a fat soluble vitamin, meaning it is stored in the liver.

Dosing is by body weight.

This is a guesstimate:

Up to........twice a week for being safe unless directed by a vet or nutritionist using a different dosing.

Toy dogs: 10-20 mcg
Small dogs: 20-30 mcg
Med dogs: 30-40 mcg
Large dogs: 40-50 mcg

Read here on vit K

More Info about Vit K...click here.

For K1,  you can get that through leafy greens such as Kale.
For K2 see above dosing.

I would like to recommend a low dose Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2.

Potassium may be needed

Potassium needs may be increased, if you are giving Digoxin or diuretics, or decreased, if you are treating with ACE inhibitors such as Enalapril, or with spironolactone. Monitor blood potassium levels and make adjustments as needed. Check with your vet before adding any potassium supplements. If you feed a raw diet or are giving dandelion, it is probably not needed.

Note that many prescription cardiac diets are high in potassium, which may be inappropriate depending on the medications being used. Some prescription diets are also low in protein, which is always inappropriate for dogs with heart disease. If you are feeding a prescription diet for heart disease, you can improve the quality of the diet by switching to a high-protein animal-source foods such as meat, eggs and dairy, but be careful not to add foods that are high in sodium, such as cottage cheese and canned fish. Note that prescription diets are not usually necessary. This can be maintained by a homemade diet.
