The USDA reports that beef from 1963 to 1992 has dropped drastically in nutrient content. For example: calcium has dropped by 20%, iron by 35% and thiamine by 50%.
As Dr Karen Becker puts it-"The best of diets – even a raw, species-specific diet – can come from soils that are depleted or from lower quality food sources. Sometimes the food simply loses many of its nutrients through processing and storage. And most commercially available pet foods, even if they’re “fortified” to meet AAFCO standards, contain synthetic, lab-concocted vitamins and minerals which don’t provide optimum nutrition."

This is a guide to help you get your dog healthy and have a balanced diet. There are plenty of different supplements that do the same thing so don't get confused on what's recommended from different sources. This is just mine and what I recommend to build the immune system and provide the right nutrients to your pets diet. It's also a good list for a regular diet. Regular diet consists of a healthy dog with no illnesses. Anytime you feed a kibble, canned or homemade diet, their will be nutrients being lost or missing. As long as your dog is breathing in air, drinking unfiltered water, taking medication, vaccines, flea and tick medications (pesticides), walking out in public on public grounds; your dog is being exposed to hazardous toxins. ALL which create havoc on the body. You can feed your dog the very best raw diet on the planet, but not every dog is the same. Some need extra vitamin C (older or ill dogs) while others need more fish oils and Vit E. Every dog is different.

Picture
This list is a general list and it is a good guide to make sure you cover all of your dog's needs. It will not hurt a perfectly healthy dog to get these supplements. They will help keep the body in check and not be missing any nutrients. For healthy detoxed bodies already, you can cut these back to every other day or half the dosage on most except fish oils, coconut oil and joint supplements.

After 6 months: of getting filtered water, raw/home cooked diet, been on these supplements and had no health issues, you can start alternating/cutting back or cutting out some of these.
CONTINUE these daily....Fish oils, vitamin E 3-times a week, joint supplements, coconut oil, dogs with digestive issues continue on digestive enzymes, continue calcium, ACV and dogs with heart disease/seniors continue COQ10. Greens and Humic/Fulvic acid you can give  3 times a week. If your dog has had an ACL tear (or is a pitbull type breed), continue thiamine, magnesium and manganese daily. Vit C can be cut back to twice a week or daily using Camu.

FYI, all of these can skip a day per week if you like..just for giving the body a break.

If your dog is on medication, please make sure supplements given work fine with what you're taking.
"It is no longer a question if a diet without supplements is complete. The question is what is missing. No matter what diet you feed, it is likely to be depleted of some nutrients because of worldwide mineral and nutrient soil depletion."~ Dr Dobias

Strengthen your dog's digestive tract, while reducing gas, bloating and indigestion.

This combination is great for building the immune system as well as reducing any chronic or acute digestive issues.
For pancreatic enzymes, check out the ones below as well. These can be given together without issues. Remember, a weak immune system can cause inflammation in the body in which also creates inflamed joints and arthritis conditions.

Dosage:
Small dogs: 1/2 capsule
Med dogs: 1/2 - 1 capsule
Large dogs: 1 - 2 capsules

Open capsule and mix into wet foods

You may give this amount for 2-4 weeks then cut back once your dog becomes more stable.

*You can add an extra probiotic along with this supplement.

Discontinue using this product at least 7-14 days before vaccinating. It contains Beta-glucans. Read more here

Fish Oil

Picture
Most all fish oils will contain a small amount of vitamin E for preserving it. You will still need to add vit E in most cases.

Place your fish oil in the fridge, just like you would fresh fish, will extend its life and slow the oxidation process. The fish oil pictured is in a BRUSHED ALUMINUM bottle and is FDA certified for human liquid consumption, and will ensure a healthier and safer alternative.

The areas with the highest contamination levels include most of the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, the Chesapeake Bay, the waters around Northern Europe and China. These are areas that have been industrialized for many years.

The waters surrounding New Zealand are some of the cleanest on the planet. Industrialization is mostly limited to the North Island. The waters are far away from major shipping lanes. The government has many regulations in place that help to protect the environment, prevent pollution and ensure that the fish populations are sustainable.
Fish oil vs. Flaxseed Oil
Technically flaxseed oil has omega 3’s.

However, it doesn’t have the DHA and EPA which is sorely missing from most diets and is crucial for your pet’s health. Plus, it can be difficult for your pet to convert the ALA into needed DHA and EPA.

You can make it easier for your dog to get these necessary omega 3 fatty acids with a high quality fish oil for dogs or feeding sardines.

CONSIDER THE SOURCE — NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand seems like it was made for raising healthy cattle. Its location and climate produce pristine conditions for cattle, and the farmers have uncanny expertise handed down for generations. New Zealand is unique among meat-producing regions in the world because its climate is moderate so the grass in the pastures grows fresh and grows green year-round which means the cows can eat the food that’s healthiest for them every day of the year.

Our nose-to-tail product line is always from grassfed, inspected animals born and raised on green pastures, with plenty of sunshine, and without the use of pesticides, hormones or antibiotics. Health of livestock used for manufacturing in New Zealand is closely monitored by a world leading biosecurity system that is second to none, and is a global exemplar. Strict government licensing, auditing and certification procedures mean that our genuine New Zealand freeze dried products can be used with complete confidence in their origin, safety and efficacy. Freeze-drying preserves color, nutrients and biological activity of components leaving the nutrients in the same balance as found in nature.

Picture

Alternate greens is Kale or you can even add it in with the greens mix: Find it here.
(Kale is one ingredient, Greens Powder is a combination of all greens)

If your dog is a special needs dog (kidney, liver etc) then half the dose of the Greens powder.
If your pet has had oxalate stones previously, do not give spinach to them. It does have a tendency to cause oxalate stones in some.

Dosage:
Small dogs: 1/4-1/2 teaspoon
Medium/Large dogs: 1/2-1 teaspoon
Giant dogs: 1-1 1/2 teaspoons

ORGANIC GREENS/FRUIT BLEND

Picture
Picture
It contains organic ingredients such as greens, fruits and a little bit of probiotic, prebiotic and digestive enzymes mix with a little added fiber. This will be a daily supplement.

Do not follow label for your dog. Use this dosage instead.

Dosage:
Small dogs: 1/4-1/2 teaspoon
Medium/Large dogs: 1/2-1 teaspoon
Giant dogs: 1-1 1/2 teaspoons

If your dog has had oxalate stones previously, do not give spinach to them. It does have a tendency to cause oxalate stones in some.

Magnesium and Manganese

Picture
Dogs need to have Manganese and Magnesium in their diet. They are not the same thing. Even with the best diet, your dog will probably be deficient in these. And if your dog is prone to ACL injuries, these are a requirement in the diet.

Magnesium Citrate (for oxalate stones, calming, can have laxative effect)
Magnesium Taurate (for low stomach acid, calming, heart, can make blood sugar fluctuate, no laxative effect)
Magnesium Glycinate (no laxative effect, high absorption, for muscle pain, calming). Powder form here.
Magnesium Malate (for achy joints and/or muscles, fatigue, heart, can cause stomach upset, no laxative effect)
Magnesium Orotate (for heart failure, high absorbing magnesium)
Magnesium L-Threonate (for brain, absorbs well, calming)
Magnesium Chloride (for cellular detoxification and tissue purification, sluggish metabolism )
Magnesium Lactate (for moderate absorption, avoid with kidney issues restoring red blood cell levels of magnesium )
Magnesium Carbonate (for indigestion and acid reflux, can have laxative effect)

**Magnesium Stearate, Magnesium Gluconate, Magnesium Glutamate, Magnesium Aspartate, Magnesium sulfate (also called Epsom salts), and Magnesium Oxide should be avoided.

Approximate Dosage:

Small dogs: 10mg - 20mg
Medium dogs: 20mg - 50mg
Large dogs: 50mg - 100mg
Giant dogs: 100mg - 150mg

Or when using powder 1/4 teaspoon up to 1/2 teaspoon depending on size of dog.

You may also purchase the capsules and open them and sprinkle into foods. Then you have a measured dose that way. Adjust dosage accordingly to dogs weight per mg.

Manganese
Manganese can be found here as well. If your dog doesn't take caps, open capsule and add into foods. Not needed if you are giving the Humic/Fulvic acid and greens powder and feeding a RAW diet.

Keep doses small.

Approximate daily dose (can do every other day):
1 mg: small dog
2-3 mg: medium dog
4-5mg: large dog
Magnesium is an essential component used for proper enzyme function and heart rate and healthy bones, muscles and nervous system. Magnesium also helps rid the body of lead and other heavy metals. Magnesium deficiency symptoms irregular heart rates, high blood pressure, seizures, bone pain, nervousness, irritability, depression and muscle spasms. Inappropriately high levels of magnesium can interfere with your dog’s ability to absorb calcium.

Vitamin D testing (from blood)

Picture
Dogs with illnesses like cancer, chronic inflammatory conditions, heart disease, renal disease, hyperparathyroidism, or inflammatory bowel disease are likely to have low vitamin D levels. If your dog has been on kibble, your dog most likely has low Vitamin D levels. In some cases kibble has been linked to high doses of vitamin D so this is why your dog needs to be tested before giving this supplement but cancer prevention and diagnosed dogs can benefit from this vitamin.

Good sources of vitamin D are, wild caught salmon, calf liver, and organic eggs (yolks). Vitamin D levels are usually low in prostate cancer and the above mentioned. Make sure to add in some healthy fats such as coconut oil to help with vitamin D absorption. Many raw diets don't need added vitamin D but again, always best to get tested.

Use extreme caution when supplementing with synthetic OTC products. Very low dosing along with not giving daily is safe. Give a couple times a week and at most, every other day for safe level's. You may also have your dog tested regularly using a test from Patterson Veterinary called the VDI Vitamin D Test Kit for Canine/Feline. If your vet doesn't carry this test (mine doesn't) you may order the kit yourself online for $75 (much cheaper than what a vet would charge) and take it with you to the vets office when you have blood drawn next time. All you need is a dab of blood. Then you may send the test off yourself for test results.

Breeds such as Golden Retrievers, have low D levels so you may want to check your dog if this is your breed but all dogs should be tested. Dog breeds prone to cancer may have low vitamin D levels.

The actual dosage depends on how much food you feed. It's approximately 225 IU per pound of food you feed daily.

Approximate Dosing (daily, every other day or 3 times a week):
Small dogs (< 30lbs): 100 - 200 IU
Medium dogs (30-75lbs): 200 IU - 300 IU
Large dogs (75lbs +): 400 IU

Astaxanthin (recommended)

Pictureclick image
Astaxanthin is known as the “king of the carotenoid family.” It’s a naturally occurring, non-toxic source of vitamin A that is hundreds of times more potent than vitamin E, ten times more potent than beta-carotene, and about five times more potent than lutein as a functional antioxidant.

Astaxanthin fights oxidative stress and free radical damage. It has very strong free radical scavenging abilities and helps protect cells, organs and tissues from oxidative damage.

Astaxanthin provides antioxidants to parts of the body that don’t normally receive a lot of antioxidant benefit. It can cross the blood-brain barrier and the blood-retina barrier. This means it can help reduce the potential for diseases of the central nervous system, the spinal cord, and the eye. Astaxanthin also supports immune function thanks to its high levels of beta-carotene.

Studies also show astaxanthin supports joint and muscle recovery after exercise, and cardiovascular health in dogs and cats.

Most other brands contain carrageenan, soy, safflower oil, sunflower oil or other forms of junk ingredients.

In rare cases MSM can cause side effects such as vomiting, diarrhea etc. after a build up.

If your dog has GI tract problems, slippery elm always helps with that. Even sensitive tummies. Read more here.  Make sure you are also giving Probiotics and Digestive enzymes as well.

Buy organic slippery elm powder here. (Select organic powder from menu)

Pumpkin (not pie filling) is great for constipation and diarrhea. Use periodically, not daily.

Slippery Elm should not be taken together with any medications as it may interfere with their absorption. Use for only 3 months then take a break for a few months.

Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil

Picture
Organic Extra Virgin Coconut oil (Glass container) is great-internally and externally. Use it externally for yeast, superficial wounds. Feed internally for shiny coats and overall health. Start with a small amount and work up to recommended dosage. (1/4-1/2 teaspoon per 10 lbs) Give daily or every other day.

Introduce new things slowly. Start with a small amount and work up to full dose within a week. If showing problems with it, keep the amount at a low dose until no problems are found, then increase slowly. Don't throw all of these in the bowl on day one and not expect a digestive upset or alike. Please add one or two of these a week and in small doses. Start with probiotics and digestive enzymes one week before starting any others.

Other good supplements that are especially for building immune systems:

Liquids absorb the best in the body but some also contain alcohol or other preservatives so be VERY careful with your selections. Liquids listed here are all alcohol free and preservative free. Powders second best and caps/pills are last. Caps/pills will contain at least one preservative or additive that isn't very good so it just depends on what it is. Softgels use caution and always poke hole and squeeze into foods.

Collagen

Picture
Picture
This brand contains 18 amino acids

(Great for joints, hair, skin, nails)

This product is low in sodium. Some of the other brand of collagens contain
higher amounts.

COLOSTRUM (IMMUNE BUILDER)

Picture
If you are giving your dog a glucosamine supplement, add Colostrum to help the body to absorb the glucosamine better. It is also a great immune builder. The same as if a calf is getting milk from his mother.

Pasture Fed/organic Colostrum

Picture
About colostrum.

Dosage:
Small dogs/cats: 1/4-1/2 teaspoon daily
Medium dogs: 1/2-1 teaspoon
Large dogs: 1-2 teaspoon

Turmeric

Picture
Turmeric- It works for everything. (Joints, diabetes, cancer..)
You can order at or find one similar. Make sure all liquids are alcohol free.

(Note: powder may have a strong smell and taste. I recommend making a paste or softgel caps squeezed into foods).

*Turmeric should not to be given to dogs prone to kidney stones. Turmeric isn't supposed to be given with blood thinners. Please ask your holistic vet if it is ok for your pet.

Vitamin C and Magnesium (Magnesium Ascorbate)

Picture
Vit C is highly recommended especially in healing any pets with a disease or illness. Give high amounts for illness until bowel tolerance. Synthetic Vitamin C is still absorbed in smaller amounts but can still be beneficial to your pet, especially a sick pet. Ascorbic Acid is extremely hard on the stomach so you should provide a buffered Vitamin C which is sodium ascorbate, calcium ascorbate and magnesium ascorbate).
Dosage:
Adjust accordingly but a good place to start or work towards.
Small Dogs: 500mg-1500mg
Medium-Large Dogs: 1000mg-3000mg
Giant Dogs: 2000mg-4000mg

Organic Pumpkin Seed Powder

Picture
Dosage:
1/4-1/2 teaspoon small-med dogs
1/2-1 teaspoon med-large dogs

Organic Raw Camu Camu Powder (All Natural Vitamin C)
(Best option)

Picture
Camu camu is a low-growing shrub found throughout the river corridors of the Amazon rainforest of Peru and Brazil.

Camu camu is most famous for its mega-C content, containing 30 to 60 times more vitamin C than an orange. In addition it contains beta-carotene, potassium and many amino acids. This organic camu camu powder is low temperature processed and has a sweet and sour flavor.
This has a tangy citrus taste.

Dosage:
1/4 teaspoon small-med dogs
1/2 teaspoon med-large dogs

Another brand on Amazon

CLEAN ORGANIC CAMU CAMU, click here.

Another choice of Vitamin C

Picture
Picture
The first ingredient is the typical synthetic form of vitamin C. This is a mix of Ascorbic acid, acerola cherry, and camu camu. I find this a terrific mix. To be given with food so the ascorbic acid does not cause upset stomach.

Rosehips

Picture
Dogs and cats can greatly benefit from Rosehips as well. Rosehips is a great additional supplement for treating and preventing arthritis and many other diseases. Also contains alot of Vitamin C.

Dosage can be small dogs/cats:
1/4-1/2 teaspoon daily

Med Sized Dogs:  1/2 -1  teaspoon
Large Size Dogs: 1 -2 teaspoon

If you are looking to purchase Rosehips, I use this one for me and my dogs. This has a tart taste but my dogs don't have any problems with eating it in their foods.

Raw Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar

Picture
Apple Cider Vinegar (Braggs unfiltered raw "mothers")- This is another one of those things that work great for PH levels, yeast, allergies, indigestion, immune systems, arthritis and more. (This is not mandatory to use but I highly recommend especially if your dog has allergy issues or any type of itching. It's just an additive to what you're already doing if you prefer.) (Great for itchy dogs)

Amount to be given or added into water:
0-25 lbs - 1/2 teaspoon
25-50 lbs-1 teaspoon
50-75 lbs 1/2 TBSP
100 lbs-1 TBSP

Ubiquinol/COQ10

Picture
This is great for the heart, joints and many other things. I recommend for an optional superior supplement.
I myself give it to all of my dogs as well as take it myself.

You can also read more here and/or purchase Ubiquinol/CoQ10 in a pump form...click here.

Or find this brand shown here.
Use code YUH339 for 10% off new customers or 5% existing customers.

Ubiquinol Dosage:
Small dogs: 50mg per day
Medium dogs: 100mg per day
Large dogs: 100mg twice per day
Giant dogs: 100 - 200mg twice per day

COQ10 Dosage:
Small dogs: 100 - 200mg daily
Medium dogs: 200 - 300mg daily
Large dogs: 300 - 400mg daily
Giant dogs: 400 - 500mg daily

When giving herbs, you can do several things:

Give 5 days a week then off 2 days..or 6 days a week and off one.

You can also do three weeks on then one week off. This gives the system a break and keeps the dogs body from getting used to them.

Same goes for Probiotics. It is always recommended but not set in stone that you alternate probiotics. In other words, one brand for 1-3 months, then switch to a different brand (or when you run out of that brand, change to the new one.

Remember, limit all vaccines. Rabies is your only vaccine that is by law. It's good for 3 years but I have heard of SOME small "behind the times" towns still making it mandatory for 1 year. PLEASE check with your town on this ordinance. Make sure your vet gives 3 year rabies. If your dog is ill or has a disease, this vaccine CAN be wavered if your vet will work with you and you can do titering at that point. Do not use or apply ANY poisonous flea and tick products. Use all natural products only. Do not apply toxic fertilizers and weed killers to your lawn. Use organic all natural instead. Heartworm meds are toxic also..Read more here why. Try Heartworm Nosodes or other natural  preventatives.
See Heartworm Treatment and Preventive options here.

To clean carpets, use vinegar and water. Read more here.

Filtered water is recommended. Water contains many toxic chemicals including fluoride for both humans and pets. Buy a filter for your faucets and/or frig. See more here.

I am only an everyday person sharing my experiences and knowledge with others. My dogs are all rescues and came with some medical issues. As our dogs age, no matter what we do right, there is always a medical issue that will arise, so being proactive instead of reactive is your best line of defense. You will also have the knowledge to make better decisions and can handle tackling a problem. Learning is our best line of defense.

Facebook is removing thousands, maybe millions of accounts if they don't like anything about them now. I had a page for HOPS on Facebook but I lost it when they deleted my account as well. Over 10,000 followers..gone just like that. We are looking for a permanent social media site. We are on Facebook again but it isn't monitored daily.
Also watch out for a lot of scams going on especially on Facebook, especially so called Drs from Nigeria claiming to help you
or your pets. A Dr named Dr Gbojie natural cure on FB is a scammer. Things are bad right now so just be aware!
