Discussing Euthanasia
I have something that’s really been bothering me this past year.
How many times have you been told when your pet is ill, that putting it down may be best?
How many times has a veterinarian said that to you?
How many friends or acquaintances have said that to you, especially if they are unaware of the whole story?
Well let me say this out loud!
NO ONE should EVER EVER EVER say those words to you. EVER!
Why do I say this? Because it is NO ONE’S place to recommend, suggest, or mention this.

A vet should give you all options, no matter the cost. A vet should never suggest this EVER! If you ask what they think you should do? Well you really shouldn’t be asking them. It is YOUR decision. If you can’t make that decision, go home and think about it. Take a few minutes to walk outside and think it over. It is no one’s decision but yours and it is YOU that needs to know when it is the right time. Many vets ASSUME you don’t have a dime to your name and won’t pay for any treatment so they recommend euthanasia. Others may think it would be too much work on your part to help them recover and suggest you putting down your beloved pet.

They should NEVER assume anything. They should ALWAYS give you options no matter what, and then let you make the decision. If things don’t quite add up from your vet, go to another vet for a second opinion.
Veterinarians need to STOP this madness. It is not their place. Do you have human medical doctors saying these things? No because it is against the law. But they may entice a family to pull the cord or whatever. Always get a second or third opinion if it isn’t making a lot of sense to you. Don’t give up to easily!
Oh and as for your friends, family or acquaintances, well, it’s not their place either. Don’t plan on them helping you financially either.
And don’t ask them either if they think you should put your pet down. It is your pet, your pocket book, and most of all your heart that needs to do this. Yes it’s a hard decision, but allowing someone else to make that call will not do you any good. In fact you may blame them or they may blame you if you are the one suggesting it.
People really need to stop making quick decisions. Yes there is always a time to let them go, but it is YOUR call; no one else’s.
And the biggest one of all, someone you don’t know, that doesn’t know you nor your history with your pet nor their medical history and still when your pet is sick, they say “Well it might be better to let them go”. NO it is not their call. ANYONE telling you that, is NOT your friend. Sorry!

I don’t care how old your pet is, if they are ill and can get better then it isn’t time. JUST BECAUSE you are broke isn’t a good excuse either. FIND some cash. Pawn something, sell something, borrow, start a fundraiser..do something. Do what you gotta do to heal your pet or get them better. JUST BECAUSE people/vets think…because your pet is old, you should consider euthanasia. No no no. You fight for your pet as hard as you can if you feel certain they will recover or can live a fairly pain free happy life. If you don’t know that answer, then learn. Read, Read, Read. That’s what this website is for, for learning to care for your pet the best way you can, without veterinarians calling all the shots. Yes we need drs, but we don’t need them telling us when to put our pets down. It is not their place nor will it ever be. They are there to help or SAVE your pet. To provide the necessary treatment to help your pet. I am pretty tired of hearing this and watching pets die when something could have been tried or done to save them. They are just way too eager to jab that needle in for the kill shot.
I have heard this so many times over the past year that it now has me absolutely furious. My dog is old and she has an unknown illness. It’s going to cost a lot of money to do a much needed surgery to get answers. I don’t care what it costs, it’s my furbaby and it’s my call. She is healthy as she can be and happy and has ZERO pain. She eats, drinks, plays and is doing her everyday normal things.
WHY IN THE H*LL would I put her down? Because the surgery is costly? Is that a good reason to kill a dog that’s otherwise doing very well? You have to be insane to think that is the answer. Even if I spend that money and she lives only another year, it’s d*mn well worth it to me. Do I have money for surgery? Nope, but I am trying like crazy to dig it up. My dog deserves that.
If it were your child, wouldn’t you? Well she is MY child.
So you see, YOU are the one that must make that decision. No one else. YOU know what you are willing to do. It’s not up to any vet or friend.
And this is me telling you the truth and saying it like it is.
Overall, have faith, think positive, and fight for things you want in your life. And do not take any veterinarians word for it. Research; ask lots of questions, get second and third opinions. And remember, the most precious gift you have is life. Give that to your pets. They are counting on you.
