If you have a pet, you know sometimes trying to keep the carpet clean and bug free is a chore. Using those store bought chemicals that you pour into your carpet cleaner or sprinkle on the carpet and vacuum up, can cause serious health risks.
To freshen your carpet and neutralize any mild odors, sprinkle baking soda onto your carpet, let stand a few minutes, then vacuum. It not only freshens the carpet but your vacuum as well.
For deeper cleaning: including urine and feces stains, liquid and food spills, dirt and chemicals tracked in from paws or shoes, invest in a steam cleaner for your home. It makes life so much easier especially with serious spills.
For example, one of my dogs had gotten sick during the middle of the night when I was sleeping. When I awoke, there was foamy watery diarrhea and clear vomit all over the entire house. I counted at least eight puddles just in one room. I woke up to horror. First I threw down towels so not to step in anything. In the meantime, I had to check on my dog and see what was going on. I rushed her to the vet's office as soon as the doors opened. The vet took one look at her after asking a few questions and immediately knew what it was. She was diagnosed with HGE.

Being a schnauzer, it is more common than you know. He wanted to keep her for the day and get some fluids in her and watch her. He said that I could probably pick her up later but to call first to see how she's doing. It seems what may have triggered this was, a week earlier I got a new dog. This wasn't her first new dog to be around so I am unsure what caused it.
Later I called and he wasn't quite ready to release her yet and for me to call in the morning. The next morning she was a lot better and I was able to go get her. She was sent home with 2 different meds and a bland diet for several days then to reintroduce foods slowly after that.
After I had taken her in that morning and he kept her, on my way home I was trying to figure out how I was going to clean up all of that mess all over my house and the smell of funk. (I have a doggie door but for some reason, she didn't appear to use it). All I could think of was, how am I going to scrub, on my hands and knees, all those puddles and remove the stains and smell. Then I remembered, I have a carpet cleaner.

So when I got home, I broke out my upright steam carpet cleaner. I added hot water and white vinegar to the water. (The vinegar will neutralize the odor and help break down the body fluids on the carpet.)
I was so overwhelmed, I started with the main room..one room at a time. I had it cleaned within an hour or two which could have easily turned into all day event if I would have done it by hand. THANK GOD I had invested in one of these marvelous machines. It was a Godsend as I just don't have a clue how I would have gotten all of that up. |
So if you have pets, consider purchasing one of these, add in hot water and vinegar and get busy. I will never be without one again. It's a great life saver.
FYI- I had my carpet replaced last year and inspected the carpet underneath as well as asked the flooring people how bad was it. They said that it was really not that bad. I was shocked. So I am assuming this carpet cleaner and adding the vinegar broke it down so there wasn't any remaining soil.
Now every few weeks to a month, I clean my carpets with this handy machine using the same ingredients. In between when I vacuum, I sprinkle the baking soda down before vacuuming. This keeps you and your pets chemical free.
TIP: Take your shoes off at the door before walking on carpet or rugs to help eliminate chemicals from being tracked in. You can also wipe off your dogs paws when coming in from other surroundings not in your backyard. (You can also use apple cider vinegar and water to rinse off the paws). Make sure to use organic and all natural fertilizers in your own yard as well and you can use Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for flea and tick killers. (See natural flea and tick products)
Make your life easier in case of spills or accidents and you and your pets will be much happier and healthier with you being stress free.
