Do you have a pet that just has that foul smelling slimy mouth? No matter how much you brush the teeth, your pet just seems to continue to have mouth issues and gum disease. Bacteria in the mouth seems to find its way back even right after brushing. Almost immediately after an animal eats, bacteria, along with food, saliva, and other particles, begin to form a slimy sticky film called plaque over the teeth.

Some pets may have internal issues such as kidney and liver disease, heart disease and many others causing issues in the mouth. Have blood work done if these changes have come on sudden. Yearly checkups with blood work and teeth cleaning will help cut down on any teeth and mouth problems. Your pets mouth can tell you many things by checking the color of the tongue and the gums. Tongue's can be seen in colors of pale or white, deep red, blue or purple, and yellow orange. A healthy tongue is normally pink unless, of course, you have a Chow Chow or another black-tongued breed. The tongue should not be slimy or coated, and there shouldn’t be any lumps or growths inside. Check often for bumps. For the break down in the color of the tongue and gums, see more here.
Some breeds are prone to gum disease more than others. I see more of this in smaller breeds.
- Chihuahua's
- Yorkies
- Dachshunds
- Brachycephalic dog breeds
- Poodles
- Papillion
- Shelties
- Maltese
Diet plays an important role as well. Commercial pet foods dry or wet contribute to gum and teeth disease. The food is actually filled with preservatives, sugars, salts, and grease so this food (and even treats) coat the teeth causing tartar build up and coated teeth with these fillers. In fact this is the number one cause of tartar on teeth. Do not believe any pet food or treat label stating it cleans teeth. THESE DO NOT WORK! The best thing you can do for your pet is brush daily. Do not under any circumstances use human toothpastes. A lot of these contain xylitol and other harmful deadly ingredients.
Changing your pets diet is key. You can also feed raw beef rib bones 3 times a week to help clean the teeth. Cats and dogs can also benefit from raw chicken necks as well although these do not clean as well as a bigger bone. Do not give weight bearing bones as these can cause teeth to break off. Also marrow bones can get stuck on the snout so stick with safer bones. Choose a size of bone for your pets. Some dogs don't chew as much. They are more swallowers. Get a bone that will not allow him/her to swallow whole.
For fighting gum disease, I have created a special recipe for brushing your dogs teeth and providing an oral rinse to fight bacteria.
Brush using your pets own tooth brush. Soft bristled. Or use a finger brush. You can also use an electric toothbrush with your pets own brush. Whatever your preference.
- 1 teaspoon of Coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon of Baking soda (can substitute with Diatomaceous Earth)
- 1/2 teaspoon of Filtered fluoride free water to help form a paste (if needed)

After brushing
Mix one capsule (or 1/2 teaspoon of powder) of probiotics with filtered fluoride free water. Pour into a syringe for oral administration. Squirt this liquid around your pet's teeth and gums. This will also help fight bacteria and any yeasty problems in the mouth. Do this with each brushing. Following these steps will reduce your buildup of tartar and bacteria.
Get yearly teeth cleanings as well if your dog has more than normal mouth issues such as bad breath and/or tartar build up more than other dogs and gums that bleed easily. Give probiotics to your pets (add into food) weeks before during and after a teeth cleaning to help reduce bacteria from spreading. Giving daily is also recommended.
If you learn to scale your dog's teeth at home, you can help keep down the tartar build up. Once scaling or cleaning the teeth, you can also use a Colloidal Silver spray onto the teeth and gums to cut down bacteria as well. Even use after brushing daily. Always keep a bottle on hand for using on all sorts of issues and to help prevent disease.
