Are Antlers a good choice for a chew bone? There are many toys out there along with all sorts of chew sticks for dogs. The problem is, which ones are best. It all depends on the dog. Not all chewies are good. I have found with having a pack of dogs, you learn really quick what works and what doesn't. This pertains to all ages and breeds. In my house we no longer have Antlers nor will we have again. I know there are different types. Deer, Elk, etc.... The reason why is, the elk antlers that I had purchased, stayed in this house for over a year. And my big dogs chewed and chewed on them. They were that hard. While wondering why they were sticking around so long, I decided to research a little further. In my research, I found that a lot of these antlers had broken dogs teeth, caused blockage's, splintering, worn teeth and so forth. I took a closer look at my dogs teeth, and sure enough, they had worn their teeth down. The back teeth were no longer sharp and pointy. The canines had been worn badly on the back side and had even stained. Meaning the enamel had been worn off. So I gathered all antlers and chunked them in the garbage.

All dogs love to chew, some more than others. So I had to find something that I felt was safe, non toxic and healthy. I decided on bully sticks. Some call them pizzle sticks. They are dried penis sticks. Yep sounds gross doesn't it. Boy do the dogs love them. In turn I also didn't want to buy any that were not USA made. The price of these sticks are kind of expensive.
I did however find some at Raw Paws. You may find some decent Elk antlers out there BUT, I am not willing to spend that kind of money then hope for the best and not have broken or worn teeth. I will skip those and move on to the pizzle sticks.

Now I have a very limited stash of things to chew on. What I have found is one very entertaining toy.
An empty paper towel cardboard roll. This has been a big hit in my house and the dogs love to rip them apart. And the cost is the price of my paper towels. So I get two uses out of one. It isn't a chew stick but it is a chew toy. My dogs will chew the cardboard but spit it out (most of the time) in little pieces, and I find myself picking up little pieces. But if it was fun and entertaining to my dogs, what the heck. Let them chew. The toilet paper rollers are a little bit harder it seems but still just as much fun. If your dogs mouth is a little too big for the rolls, just flatten them some so they can grab it. You can even cut them to make them smaller in length.

Learn to be creative, save money and have fun. It doesn't have to cost a lot to find entertaining chew toys or chew sticks. Find a good brand of bully sticks, make sure they are USA sourced. A lot of toys on the market are made and sourced from China. Steer VERY clear of these. They are toxic and unhealthy. You can pay a little more for USA products or you can buy cheap and pay later at the vets office. And always no matter where they come from, check the sources. Make sure there is not a hidden story behind what you are purchasing. It isn't worth your dogs life.

What cardboard paper towel rolls are made from: The cardboard of course is made from wood. There are no chemicals in the cardboard. It isn't allowed for in home use. Same goes for the glue. The glue is made out of protein glues formulated with gelatin, glycerin, water, and corn sugar. This makes them biodegradable.
* I buy the toilet paper and paper towel rolls NOT from large manufacturers (Bounty, Charmin) but from brands such as Seventh Generation, Simple truth etc. There is no glue on the outside that holds the toilet paper in place on the toilet paper rolls. If you see glue attached to cardboard, just peel it away.
